Holland's Reflections 6.14.2013

Teaching, Learning, and Caring

Hello Warriors,

I trust that you are having a relaxing summer.  Kudos to all of our staff that are currently working summer school and supporting academic camps that are being held around the district.

Last week, I had a unique opportunity to visit Christian Fenger Academy (Chicago, Illinois) and their sister high school, John Marshall Metropolitan High School with a group of administrators from the South Learning Community.
PLC South Administrators visit Chicago High Schools
6/2013
Yes, Chicagoans, are still in school. The schools that I visited were 98% African-American, had high levels of poverty, concerning disciplinary issues, and were on the verge of shut down a few years ago. However, despite significant challenges, these schools were able to significantly improve student outcomes. The schools attribute much of their success to using Positive Behavior Interventions and restorative discipline practices. The schools are now being recognized nationally as “Turn Around” schools. The purpose of my trip was to find the magic formula... how did they do it? What makes these schools special?

In reflection, the truth of the matter is that there is no magic formula, program, or initiative that guarantees school success. During our visit it was clear that the “PBIS” strategies were implemented with high fidelity, but what really make these schools special places for students is the concentrated efforts of compassionate educators who consistently take the extra time to encourage, invest, inspire, mentor, and motivate the students that they serve.  “The most powerful fuel for sustaining the initiative to improve a school is not the desire to raise test scores but rather the moral imperative that comes with the desire to fulfill the hopes of those we serve and those with whom we work” ( (DuFour , DuFour , Eaker , & Karhanek , 2004).

Curriculum, Instruction, Assessment

My new year’s goal was to read a book per month. Unfortunately, I am significantly behind. However, I have come across several articles that I believe you should read.

Podcast: Too easy, just listen. Why are schools expelling out of school suspension? Simple it does not work!
Podcast: Why some schools expel suspension!

Article 1: Literature Review is too long to read at one time. You get the general gist of the research on pages 3 -8.  I would love to hear and see your thoughts. Anyone that leaves a comment on my blog earns a free ice cream during pre planning… literally.  Scroll to the bottom and leave a comment.

Due to popular demand the district has extended Rick Wormel’s Professional Learning days. Please go to Employee Express and sign-up… you do not want to miss it! Check out his video clip on differentiating for your students.
